PLANT "CASHMERE"
"Plant-based "Wool" is a plant-based alternative to protein sourced wool with a hand feel similar to cashmere hence the name. The textile is made of 70% rain-fed regenerative organic cotton, 5% of Calotropis Pod Fibres, and 25% Calotropis Stem fibers. See images below.
The calotropsis fibres are hollow and has a similar capacity to hold in heat that animal wool does and is therefore a great alternative for those who choose to be animal-free.
-
Production of 1kg of this yarn saves 9000 L of clean drinking water compared to 100% cotton yarn
-
Cultivating the calotropis plant can convert dry, unusable terrain into profitable land for farmers
-
Scientific research confirmed that these fabrics have antimicrobial properties against most common skin disease created by staph bacteria
-
This fabric is sustainable at every stage of their life cycle – from production and processing to ultimate disposal
-
The cellulose fibers do not shrink with every wash and are felt to be generally easier to maintain than protein-based wool fabrics.
Calotropis grows wildly at deserted lands with no water, no care, no pesticides. Production of our textile is mostly done by hand - it empowers women and helps the rural economy in dry parts of the country where jobs are unsecured.
Manufactured in India through a waste-free process. Once fibers are extracted, the concentrated and fermented leftovers from the plant are mixed with different Ayurvedic herbs and made into ARKA- a very efficient bio - nutrient and insect repellent (not available outside of India at present.)
Designers can also become Zero Textile Waste and work with the Circular Centre to arrange unwearable clothing take-back system to go through our Circular Textile Waste Service available in Australia.
