Everyday I’d walk into my apt and see this self portrait of Frida Kahlo. I have another large one on my bedroom wall which would keep me company for the months that turned into years of being bedridden from a bad back.
Frida also kept my beautiful friend Candy Royalle company. But it was the combination of Frida and Candy that kept me going, creating a life that I want for myself and My son Watson, and a business that supports farming communities, makers and Artisans in India who also live a life with struggles, and provide an opportunity for designers to use textiles that are sustainable and nourishing.
In those years STSC and EMBROID became my purpose, from bed, keeping going, because I wanted to be as strong and fierce and productive and do something that matters, just like Frida and Candy. As we farewelled Candy yesterday, I can only hope to impact people in the way she did, in my own way. As someone said yesterday Candy “you changed me”. Your fierce love for humanity and activism will be inside me forever and I dedicate my business to you.
I gave the Frida self portrait to the memorial yesterday so I can now have your portrait sitting in Frida’s spot. Thank you for your gifts. #restinpower#valecandy @embroid.shop @stscsustainabletextiles
